A distinction is made between grove-forming and clump-forming bamboos. The grass-like growing, often meter-long stalks, which become woody in the course of the plant's life, are the grove-forming bamboos. The clump-forming bamboos grow like normal grasses - form clumps, remain flexible and do not become woody. Rarely do these grow larger than a meter.
